2011 Predictions and Our Input (03-2011)
Dr. Hagerty is a board-certified plastic surgeon, a member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the leading national organization of physicians who specialize in cosmetic surgery. These are some of their predictions for cosmetic surgery in 2011. The information is based on interviews with leading plastic surgeons in the United States. We provide this information to you, so that you will know that if you are considering a cosmetic surgery procedure, you are certainly not alone! We will also give you our input on some of these developments.
As the economy improves, demand for facelifts and other facial rejuvenation surgery will increase. You may be one of many people who have been putting off surgery for the past few years because of the economy. If you wish to discuss any cosmetic procedure, please make an appointment to see Dr. Hagerty.
Cosmetic “injectables”such as Restylane and Perlane will become even more popular. If you are considering improving your appearance with one of these products, we advise you to do so in the safe environment of a plastic surgery facility. Too many consumers, looking for a bargain on cosmetic procedures, will unfortunately falls victim to "discount injectables" and cosmetic surgical procedures performed by untrained, or poorly trained practitioners. These procedures are now being offered and performed in non-medical environments, such as onboard cruise ships. We strongly recommend that you keep in mind that in such a venue, if there is a problem, you literally be in the middle of the ocean.
The general population is becoming increasingly aware of the serious health consequences of being obese. That awareness, we hope, will result in weight loss amongst an increased number of individuals. As a result, the ASAPS predicts that more people will seek plastic surgery procedures in order to contour their bodies after significant weight loss. This practice offers a variety of body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasty and liposuction. If 2011 finds you “lighter,” we would be happy to discuss ways in which you can improve your newly-fashioned body.
In 2011, baby boomers will hit the age of 65 at the rate of 10,000 a day. As the baby boomer generation ages, correspondingly, the ASAPS believes that there will be an increase in the numbers of new breast implants. If you are considering a breast implant, have “old” implants that you wish to replace, or you are considering a breast lift, we ask that you make an appointment to discuss the various options available to you through our office.
Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez have shined the spotlight on posterior body lifts, buttock lifts, and buttock augmentations. The general population is picking up on that body “accessory” and the ASAPS predicts that shaping and augmenting buttocks will become a more popular procedure. If gravity because of increasing age has made your derrière sag, there are safe surgical procedures that can alleviate the problem. Last, but not least, the Society is pleased to report that consumers are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and knowledgeable about the latest procedures in cosmetic surgery. We have always believed that an educated patient is our best one and are available to discuss any procedure that is of interest to you. We want you to know what we offer, how the procedure “works,” and what results you can expect. Albeit the Internet and TV’s talk shows provide information, much of which is accurate, we strongly advise that you speak to us, so that we may give you information that is evidence-based.
