Breast Reconstruction & TRAM Surgery

Breast reconstruction is elective surgery performed on mastectomy patients. It allows women who have lost breasts to cancer to preserve a more natural profile. It also adds immeasurably to psychological healing. Breast reconstruction surgery is an effective way to rebuild the breast. There are several options available which Dr. Hagerty will discuss with you. These depend on a variety of factors including your age, health, and goals for appearance. Most instances of reconstruction will require more than one operation, but the process can begin immediately after the mastectomy has been performed, sparing the patient some of the trauma that is associated with loss of a breast.

TRAM Surgery, one of the most common breast reconstructive procedures, stands for "transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous" flap. The TRAM utilizes unwanted donor skin and fat from the abdomen to rebuild the breast.
